Luwak Coffee is one of the most expensive types of coffee in the world. It was originated from Southeast Asia region. Due to the price and the demand of Luwak Coffee is really high, some of the supplier / seller tried to scam people by blending the normal coffee bean with the real Luwak Coffee bean. We hardly detect them if it is in powder form but we could easily notice when it was still green bean (unroasted green bean). These are few steps to analyze whether the coffee bean is real or fake Luwak Coffee.
1. Real Luwak Coffee green bean tends to have a nice smooth surface without any flaws. In here, flaws mean the green coffee beans have some black dots and sometimes it doesn’t appear as a whole bean (broken bean). The real Luwak Coffee bean usually have a perfect physical rarely have black dots or broken, because the animal (Luwak) have strong instinct to choose only the very best coffee fruit. Therefore, the green bean of Luwak Coffee tends to be in perfect condition.
2. Another physical different between normal coffee and Luwak Coffee green bean are the color and the smell. The real Luwak Coffee green bean has yellowish color and better smell (stronger aroma). Those people who mixed/blended normal coffee into Luwak coffee bean will be obviously noticed because the yellowish color is not evenly distributed and having some greenish color. The yellowish color was from the perfect fermentation inside the animal’s (Luwak’s) stomach.
**warning about the color, some people use paint to color those beans in order to meet the requirement of physical luwak coffee bean.
3. Husk of Luwak Coffee easily fall off during process while the normal coffee’s husk harder to fall off or stay with the bean.
Besides physical form, we could also detect fake or real Luwak Coffee by tasting it. Some people who has low caffeine tolerance normally will get stomache, cold sweating, feeling to puke and some even faint. Those people are the one able to detect instantly whether it is real or fake Luwak Coffee, because Luwak Coffee has very low caffeine almost consider zero caffeine (tested in the lab).
